Troop placement within your hero is a critical element of the battle. Alot of it depends on what your hero attributes are (which troops get a bonus from your hero), what scrolls you are using. But to fight another player the best troop setups are as follows.

1-1-full-full-full (1 troop in first slot, 1 troop in second slot, as many as slot will hold for each remaining slot)
1-1-full-full- half (1 troop in first slot, 1 troop in second slot, as many as slot will hold for 3rd and 4th and half for 5th)
10-20-full-full-half (10 troops in first slot, 20 troops in second slot, as many as slot will hold for 3rd and 4th and half for 5th)

To be honnest this troop placement doesn't make sense.
Maybe the guys from EC changed something but the Troop choice is much more important then how many you put in a specific slot.

Slot 1 and slot 2 are actually important. If your troops survive, the enemy cannot use the "free strike" from slot 4 and 5.
If you defeat slot 1 and 2 completely and slot 3 gained the upperhand in his challenge versus the opponents slot 3, your slot 4 and 5 can kill all remaining troops with "ZERO" losses.

I tested this a few times vs Dark Knights which are all mounted troops.
DRK Troops
[1] 98 Drk, [2] 2 Drk (lmao?), [3] 81 Drk, [4] 84 Drk, [5] 77 Drk
VS.
Kan's Troops
[1] 50 Heavy Cavalry, [2] 50 Heavy Cavalry, [3] 100 Pikeman, [4] 15 Horse Archers, [5] 15 Horse Archers

Result
DRK Troops
[1] 0 Drk, [2] 0 Drk , [3] 0 Drk, [4] 0 Drk, [5] 0 Drk

Kan's Troops
[1] 48 Heavy Cavalry, [2] 49 Heavy Cavalry, [3] 97 Pikeman, [4] 15 Horse Archers, [5] 21 Horse Archers

This was done with a Lv. 15 naked hero with no combat specs and the fight was 30 squares away, which basicly puts them at an equal level.

Seeing as all was done in just a single round it's safe to say that the Horse Archers butchered all the Dark Knights in slot 4 and 5 and prolly what was left in slot 1 and 2, since the Pikeman murdered their opponents.

To be honest, I do not know the specifics as to why it works or how it works. I'm not good with that part of it. But trust me when I say that it does work and work great. In my other server, there are some strategists that tried to explain it but i didn't grasp it. We absolutely rule the other server and are extremely war oriented. They are they top military people on the server, so I trust them when they say this is by far the best setups to use when attacking other players. That could be the difference, players vs devils. I couldn't say for sure. I will ask them again to explain it to me or if there are different setups for devils and players.

see what you mean by switching for more damage. As you said, nothing would have won him the battle. I have always been told to NEVER leave an open slot, and that was told to me over and over and over.

Alittle more info on the 1-1 or 10-20. Still don't know the mechanics but supposedly by placing them in the first 2 slots makes the enemies first 2 slots attack them and ties them up in battle while your being much larger easily wipes out their 3rd slot and then can gang up on slots 1 and 2. That is all I've been able to get from it so far.

yes and thats exactly what I mean.
It's just a matter of tactics and survival.
You cannot always use the 1-1-x-x-x (or variations of it) tactic imo.
If you take into consideration that with optimal slot vs slot setup ( gogo spies ) and make use of the killer bonus one side can loose the initiative if slots are wiped out in the first round.
Therefor making ganging up either possible in the 2nd round or not at all.

This tactic has been proven to work for me and i managed to completly destroy opposing forces up to 4 times my size just by smart troop picking.
(Granted my troops lvl and upgrades where higher) so I might be off totaly here and all was just luck.
But still, I will investigate this further untill I mastered the art of combat ^^.

Any info is welcome so i can keep analyzing.
